On Tuesday 21st March Shane Wiseman, our resident artist, joined us to demonstrate adding small figures to landscapes. Shane showed how simple it could be to add just a few strokes of paint to indicate a small figure in a larger picture. His easy to follow instructions created a range of small figures standing or walking- a technique that could...

Friday 17th and Saturday 18th March was our Spring Exhibition at Oddfellows. The weeks of planning and preparation resulted in an excellent exhibition, with around 20% of all paintings sold! This has just demonstrated that we are now back on track after a lean few years due to Covid.

Graham Lee, one of our current members, was today's model. The model session was well attended with the usual variety of media being used- including pencil, pastel and watercolour. Despite everyone having the same model, each approach is different. Some draw the whole figure in amazing detail, others prefer to focus on capturing the figure in tone...

Today's Inside/Outside session focused on seascapes. After a few minor technical issues, we were able to watch a very soothing presentation on painting waves- no dialogue , just images of the stages performed to calming music. Cliff prepared a few handouts to accompany this short tutorial for those who would like to try this at home. The...

Today Shane made one of his regular visits to Littleworth. He began todays session with a quick watercolour landscape. Using a small photograph as a reference, Shane planned out his scene - using low tac tape on the paper to provide a guideline for the horizon. Mixing and blending colours, the sky was added with a few lightbeams lifted...

On Tuesday 7th February, Stuart demonstrated how we can create accurate and realistic pictures, by using perspective. Not all art wants or needs this accuracy- we only have to look at Egyptian art to see this. But if you want to create pictures where images reflect what the eye sees- then perspective is a wonderful tool.

In the chill of January, we were able to take part in drawing and painting a landscape without having to suffer the weather!

I was involved in running an introductory workshop (in my capacity as Theresa Malein, Garden Studio Arts) with my friends Sue and Phil of S&P Watercolours at Bishton Hall on Sunday 22nd January. It took place in The Orangery at Bishton Hall and ran from 10 - 4.30. We had nine participants, of varied experience and ability.
The...

On Tuesday 24th January, member Keith Potts delivered a wonderful presentation discussing portraiture. As always, Keith was able to reference many well known, and some lesser known artists, who have guided him in his passion for creating portraits. He demonstrated the proportions used - always a good guide to ensuring you are getting features 'in...

Tuesday 17th January was the first of our regular model sessions. These are always ideal opportunities to draw from life, to develop your figure drawing or portraits. Members use a range of media for these sessions ranging from pencil , charcoal, pastel or other dry media through to watercolour , acrylics and oils.

On Tuesday 6th December our very own Doug Blanks presented a talk and demonstration about finishing your pictures. Pictures you may have thought already finished can be easily improved by using glazes. Doug illustrated the need for a glaze using a picture of a stone pathway amongst stone buildings.... very grey! With the addition of dark glazes to...

If you fancy a break from all things christmas... I can thoroughly recommend the Maurice Wade Exhibition which is currently at Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. The temporary exhibition is showing a wide range of Wade's work spanning his painting years. He works in a very monochromatic style, creating the stark landscape of the potteries.

Our winter exhibition took place on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd November. Oddfellows was transformed into an Art Gallery of wonderful artworks displayed beautifully. The cafe was available for drinks and cakes at very affordable prices.

This evening, 8th November , we were treated to a presentation by local artist Steve Woodhams. Steve originates from Bloxwich and is soon to be the Chair at the Walsall Artists Group - a well established group of artists for over 70 years.
